FDIC e-Mail Scam Alert
Scammers are now acting under the guise of the FDIC in a recent email scam designed to collect personal information to gain unauthorized access to bank accounts. The email asks you to "Visit the official FDIC website and perform the following steps to check your Deposit Insurance Coverage," according to a recent Consumer Affairs article.

As reported in the The Miami Herald, a recent email scam offers a check for $985 if you pay $810 in taxes to claim a whole lot more. The scam uses a legitimate company’s name and letterhead, but they are victims of identity theft.

W. Va Woman Gets Three Years on Federal ID Theft Charges
The Register-Herald is reporting that a Rainelle, W.Va. woman will spend three years in jail for identity theft with intent to steal $24,000. There was a joint investigation between the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, West Virginia State Police and the Dunbar Police Department.

Woman Uses Stolen Credit Card To Pay For Plastic Surgery
The LA Times has reported that a Berkeley area woman has been sentenced to 32 months in prison for burglary and identity theft. She charged $24K worth of plastic surgery on stolen AMEX.
